The Tamanu tree flowers twice a year with fragrant white flowers, which later yield clusters of spherical fruit. The mature fruit of the tree are about the size of an apricot and have a large odourless pale kernel inside. This kernel is dried in the sun for two months until it becomes sticky with dark, thick, rich oil. This sticky oil is cold-pressed to make greenish yellow oil similar to olive oil.
